Romanian military plane lands in Tripoli to lift out citizens

Bucharest - A Romanian military transport plane landed Thursday evening in Tripoli to evacuate citizens out of danger in the North African country

The foreign ministry said that any extra seats not occupied by Romanians could be filled with other Europeans seeking to flee.
Currently 51 Romanians were waiting at the airport in the Libyan capital to be picked up. A second transport plane has also landed on nearby Malta to transport Romanians who fled by sea or other means to the Mediterranean islands.

An estimated 500 Romanians were living in Libya when the protests against the government of Moamer Gaddafi broke out last week. After Gaddafi's security forces started firing and killing protesters, the violence has escalated and opposition forces have captured several north-eastern cities.
